The Day of Silence's purpose is to bring attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment and effective responses. The goal of the Day of Silence is to make schools safer for all students, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. In a Harris Interactive study on bullying, students said two of the top three reasons students are harassed in school are actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender expression. Additionally, nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT students experience harassment at school. Students across the country participate in the Day of Silence to bring attention to this problem, let students who experience such bullying know that they are not alone and ask schools to take action to address the problem.

I personally myself have many friends that are LGBT members, many of them do get harassed and, one friend specifically is a lesbian girl that physically gets abused by guys in her school and no one in her school sees her as a victim. People lower the LGBT community, sure they have anti-bullying week, but when we try to do day of silence they see it as a form of rebelling. I just want everyone to be more open minded and see the issue here, we LGBT members are getting attacked for just being ourselves. Whatever they attack us with we wont 'be normal' and they have to see that their are major problems with LGBT bullying. I'm very grateful that none of my friends personally have ever committed suicide or have attempted to, but their are many LGBT members out their that, just couldn't take it anymore. Please be a voice and stand up to get this word across.
